The Enemy Within

By: Mr. Curmudgeon

Of the recent escalation in murder and mayhem resulting from the bloody drug war now raging in his country, Mexican President Felipe Calderon assessed the situation bluntly. “The main cause of the problems associated with organized crime is having the world’s biggest [illegal drug] consumer next to us.” U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton concurred. “Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade.”

According to the Central Intelligence Agency, in 2007 alone, Mexico’s drug cartels produce 75 tons of heroin, 17 tons of marijuana, and distributed 90 percent of Columbia’s cocaine to the U.S. In return, Americans lavished $10 billion on Mexico’s Sinaloa, Juarez, Tijuana, Gulf and Los Zetas drug cartels. In an attempt to avoid reality, America’s drug-addled citizens are in a dazed alliance with leg-breaking gangsters seeking to topple the elected government of our southern neighbor, replacing it with bloodthirsty narco-terrorists whose money, weapons and organization Osama bin Laden would – well – kill for.

“People use the word nature,” said 1960s drug guru Timothy Leary. “What is natural to me is these botanical species, which interact directly with the nervous system. What I consider artificial is 4 years at Harvard, and the Bible, and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, and the Sunday school teachings.”

And what, you might ask, was Leary’s alternative to God’s moral universe? In his 1968 book The Politics of Ecstasy, Leary wrote, “If you are serious about your religion, if you really wish to commit yourself to the spiritual quest, you must learn how to use psychochemicals. Drugs are the religion of the twenty-first century. Pursuing the religious life today without using psychedelic drugs is like studying astronomy with the naked eye...”

In 1969, Leary – stumbling far ahead of his times – sought to share his hallucinogenic insights with voters by running for governor of California. John Lennon thought Leary’s campaign slogan “Come together, join the party,” so catchy, it inspired the insipid lyricist to pen the Beatles’ classic tune “Come Together.”

“He wear no shoeshine, he got toe-jam football
He got monkey finger, he shoot coca-cola
He say “I know you, you know me”
One thing I can tell you is you got to be free
Come together right now over me.”

Ronald Reagan somehow managed to overcome the wave of support generated for Leary by John Lennon’s spine-tingling and articulate endorsement, becoming the Golden State’s 33rd Governor.

Things have changed considerably since then. Now those fun-loving 60’s flower children not only continue to do drugs but vote. What else explains the rise of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Barack Obama?

Marijuana aficionados even have a political association, The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORMAL), which pressures legislative bodies across the nation to legalize the aromatic depressant.

Many of today’s baby boomers look back on the 1960s fondly. For many, it was a time of rebellion and discovery, an age of bell-bottom jeans and tie-dyed t-shirts, free love and rock ‘n roll, anti-war protests and lots and lots of drugs. Not in their wildest narcotic-induced imaginings could baby boomers predict that expanding their consciousness would turn the third world nations they claim to care about into chaotic Darwinian jungles. Bill Clinton may not have inhaled but his drug purchase, and that of millions of his fellow Americans, gradually helped build formidable narco terror cartels; attesting to Hillary’s maxim that “it takes a village.”

Speaking of our nation’s Secretary of State, Hillary is in Mexico to coordinate joint efforts to combat Mexico’s drug violence, which is spreading across America’s porous 2,000-mile southern border. This is in response to a Pentagon report that states:

“…the [Mexican] government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and press by criminal gangs and drug cartels. How that internal conflict turns out over the next several years will have a major impact on the stability of the Mexican state. Any descent by Mexico into chaos would demand an American response based on the serious implications for homeland security alone.”

To keep the cash flowing and undercut law enforcement in Mexico’s northern boarder states, the drug cartels employ methods practiced by Islamic terrorists. According to CNN’s Anderson Cooper, “A lot of tactics they’ve learned come from insurgents in Iraq to sow terror. The beheadings in particular are about sowing terror…We have seen YouTube-style videos made by drug cartels to instill terror.”

In his second nationally televised press conference since becoming President, when asked if he would use U.S. troops to safeguard the nation’s southern border, Obama said, “I think it’s unacceptable if you’ve got drug gangs crossing our borders and killing U.S. citizens. I think if one U.S. citizen is killed because of foreign nationals who are engaging in violent crime, that’s enough of a concern to do something about it.”

While President Obama is winding down America’s military commitments in the war on terror, he may have no choice but to escalate America’s military commitments in the war on drugs. It appears that Timothy Leary’s psychedelic god is not the benign master the good doctor originally proclaimed, and it is unleashing its dark angels of death upon America. More than 200 years after the founding of our republic, the American people are fast becoming the author and finisher of its destruction.
