Democratic Piracy

By: Mr. Curmudgeon
mrcurmudgeon@inthepublicsquare.com

“As in all lands where there are many people there are some thieves. So in all seas much frequented, there are some pirates.”

--Captain John Smith

It’s unlikely President Obama’s new Nerf Pentagon will employ the U.S. Navy’s sizable military prowess to plunge Somali brigand ships to the bottom of the Gulf of Aden. Seizing American merchant vessels and their crews is, apparently, a distraction from Obama and his party’s swashbuckling seizure of America’s treasure ships now sailing on economic rough seas – the banks. The Democratic Party and its captain in the White House are practicing a form of democracy that existed on the waters off North America between 1680 to 1730 – piracy.

Contrary to the popular notion that pirate captains were absolute tyrants answerable to no power outside themselves, they attained their high rank by the consent of the governed or, in this case, the pirate crew. “They only permit him to be captain, on condition that they may be captain over him,” wrote Daniel Defoe.

Just two of the eleven articles of the pirate code of Black Bart Roberts, reads:

1. Every man shall have an equal vote in affairs of moment. He shall have an equal title to the fresh provisions or strong liquors at any time seized.
2. Every man shall be called in turn by the list on board of prizes. But if they defraud the company to the value of even one dollar, they shall be marooned.

In today’s America, piracy is alive and well. During the last Presidential campaign, the Democratic candidate’s official web site promised, “Obama will ask the wealthiest 2% of families to give back  [emphasis added] a portion of the tax cuts they have received over the past eight years to ensure we are restoring fairness and returning to fiscal responsibility.”

Only pirates would define confiscating the income of the minority to buy the votes of the majority as “giving back.” Only pirates would define a rum inspired $3.6 trillion budget as “responsible.” Blackbeard bought votes with jewels and rum; America’s political pirates take power with “stimulus bills,” sub-standard health care, inadequate education, and many other disastrous government programs.

Of course, this form of piracy is only possible with the crew’s consent – the crew being the American people. Our nation condemns Somali buccaneers while practicing our own peculiar brand of piracy – twisting the ballot box into a treasure chest to hold our ill-gotten gains. How long before America’s motly crew lowers the Stars and Stripes and raises the Jolly Roger?
